Saturday's Douchebag You Should Know About: TX Governor Greg Abbott

I know him as the guy who banned trans youth from access to gender affirming care such as puberty blockers and HRT. Oh, and he also issued a directive to have families who support their trans kids in getting gender affirming care to be investigated for child abuse.

But there’s so much more.

He defended the state’s ban on same-sex marriage.

During Covid, he opposed vaccines and masking mandates.

He tried to overturn Obamacare.

He opposes gun control.

He signed a six-week abortion ban into law.

In 2021, he referred to undocumented immigrants crossing the border as an "invasion."

In the summer of 2023, Abbott signed into law Senate Bill 17, which prohibits Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) offices at Texas's public colleges and universities.

And just this past Thursday, he pardoned Daniel S. Perry, a man who had been sentenced to 25 years for fatally shooting a protester during a Blacks Lives Matter demonstration. The man Perry murdered was 28, white, and an Air Force veteran.

Huh.

It’s kind of mind boggling, isn’t it?

Well, there must be something in it for him.

Let’s pray for the people of Texas, even if we are not the praying sort. They’ve got it bad.

I love Texas. I lived in Houston for three years back when George W. Bush was governor. I loved it because it was incredibly diverse, the food was amazeballs, people were polite and humorous, and there were so many great art museums. I loved it hard.

Now I can’t even take my trans kid there for a visit.
