Gender Defiant is a weekly essay series by parents raising trans kids. Founded by teacher and writer Tina Carson (she/her), a cis mother of a trans nonbinary teen, in 2024, it is co-produced by writer and healthcare worker Noa Rabinow (she/they), cis mom of a trans teen, and features essays by rotating regular contributors and guest writers.*

We write for fellow parents raising gender expansive kids, but also anyone—parent or not—curious to learn more about what loving someone trans is like.

Gender Defiant tells the real stories beneath the media propaganda and trans panic stirred up for political gain. Each Gender Defiant essay springs from a personal perspective, but we are united in defying enforced gender definitions through openness and love. We are here for solidarity, comedy, complication, questions, healing, and joy.
